Lesson 15 examines the process in which the founders used in deliberating and amending the Constitution. There very first debate was over the adoption of the Bill of Rights. Some delegates believed that the Constitution already contains many protections that would be commonly found in the bill of rights such as right to jury in criminal cases, ex post facto laws and habeas corpus. George Mason, South Carolina delegate Charles Pinckney and Massachusetts delegate Elbridge Gerry all argued unsuccessfully for a bill of rights.
This lesson also shares the ways the Constitution can be amended and why James Madison really wanted a bill of rights in the first place. Finally, you should learn about the arguments for and against Judicial review and how has it change the way many citizen's now view the Supreme Court. |
